High Sheriff of Hull and East Riding, Mike Rice, Presents £2,000 to Welcome House

Welcome House, a Hull-based charity supporting asylum seekers and refugees, has been awarded £2,000 from the Tribune Trust to expand its community football programme. The cheque was formally presented during a visit by Mike Rice, High Sheriff of Hull and the East Riding, who met staff, volunteers, and participants to hear how the sessions are transforming lives.

Welcome House provides a safe and welcoming environment for people seeking asylum and refugees, offering practical support, advice, and essential items. Its football initiative has quickly become a lifeline for many, giving participants—often newly arrived in Hull with few opportunities to socialise—a chance to connect, stay active, and build friendships.

With players from 12 different nationalities already taking part, the sessions are about much more than football. They create a sense of belonging, reduce isolation, and promote wellbeing, while also strengthening community cohesion. The grant will help cover essential costs including pitch hire, equipment, kits, and transport.

Speaking during his visit, Mike Rice, High Sheriff of Hull and the East Riding, said:

“Welcome House is doing fantastic work in bringing people together and breaking down barriers. Football is a universal language, and here it is being used not just to play a game, but to build hope, friendship, and community. It is a privilege to support this project through the Tribune Trust.”

Sarah Tague, Fundraiser at Welcome House, added:

“This support from the Tribune Trust is a huge boost to our football programme. Many of the people we work with have arrived in Hull with very little and face significant challenges. Football gives them a safe space to belong, to connect, and to feel part of the community. This funding means we can keep the sessions going and make sure they remain open to everyone who needs them.”

The Welcome House football project is expected to directly benefit 50 participants, while also contributing to wider community safety and inclusion.
