A DOUBLE-decker bus is embarking on a regional tour to promote Victim Support after the group was chosen as the charity of the year by East Riding's High Sheriff.

Following the appointment of Nicholas Hildyard as the new High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, he selected his chosen charity as Victim Support.

Now a collaboration of representatives from the charity, the police and the fire service will travel around the region for three weeks on the bus.

Tracey Bourne, branch manager for Haltemprice and Holderness Victim Support, said the tour would be invaluable for them.

"It is great we have been given this opportunity to get out to places and people we normally wouldn't reach," she said.

"Nationally we have been in existence 30 years, but often people are unaware of the service we can offer. Hopefully by getting out and about we will be able to help those who need the support we offer most."

Mr Hildyard, appointed to the 1,000-year-old High Sheriff post, which makes him the Queen's representative in the region, said: "Victim Support is a terrific institution and does so much for so many people.

"All the counsellors working for the charity are volunteers and work hard at what they do.

"They try to help victims and witnesses, but often people don't use the service.

"Funding was secured from the Tribune Trust and Arco to get this tour off the ground and hopefully it will prove a success.

"We have specifically chosen areas that we feel would benefit most from the services on offer at Victim Support."

The High Sheriff's role dates back to Saxon times before the Norman Conquest and is the oldest continuous secular office under the Crown.

The bus, provided by Haltemprice Crime Prevention Panel, will be seen in and around Hull on weekdays from Tuesday to Wednesday, May 16.

Following this, the tour will head to the East Riding, starting at Cottingham on Thursday, May 17, travelling, among other places, to Hessle, Beverley, Bridlington and Wetwang, near Driffield, before finishing in Goole on Friday, May 25.
