09:10 - 10 March 2007

E Yorks: More than £1.6m is being invested in sports coaching in the region thanks to the Humber Sports Partnership and Sport England.

The Humber Sports Partnership is an organisation that brings together stakeholders with an affiliation and connection to sport.

The money will help improve sporting and coaching opportunities at a local level. It will fund the employment of 23 coaches over three years in the region.

Rachel Roberts, director of the Humber Sports Partnership, said: "We are thrilled to have secured this funding for the county.

"This will have a major impact on the delivery of high-quality sports coaching. We are confident this will result in increased, sustained participation, which is great for the future health, fitness and wellbeing of residents.

"Last year's national school sports survey showed the number of pupils identified as gifted and talented had increased to almost 190,000 - four times more than in 2003-04.

"Employing more quality coaches who are able to spot talent and then nurture and develop this skill will see this figure increase further."

The funding for the scheme has come from Sport England's Community Investment Fund and was match-funded by local partners Tribune Trust, School Sports Partnerships, Football Foundation, Humberside Police, Extended Schools and the local authorities.
