A Night challenge for
teams of youngsters will kick-off this
weekend.
The Humber Nite Challenge, an
all-night ramble through a secret secure forest
site in North Lincolnshire, will start at 10pm on
Saturday and go through until 6am on Sunday.Around
400 young people, aged 14 to 19, will navigate in
77 teams through a large woodland in a regional
competition aimed at getting them to learn outdoor
skills.
For 13 years the former Humberside
County Council, and later North Lincolnshire
Council, organised a major orienteering
competition known as Nite Pilot at the coldest
time of the year to challenge young people. It was
a major event but was discontinued eight years
ago. Now it is back and keeping youngsters
active.
Geoff Ogden, director of organisers
the Tribune Trust and event co-ordinator, said:
"This will be an exciting and rewarding event for
all competitors. We're delighted with the response
from such a wide variety of organisations. And the
planning for it has brought the local authorities
together working with sponsors, St John Ambulance,
senior scouts and Rotary. That will also benefit
the region."
The Tribune Trust, Prince's
Trust and Yorkshire Forward are sponsoring the
event in partnership with the youth service
organisations of the East Riding, North
Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and Hull
City Councils.
The challenge aims to
encourage young people to work as a team and
attempt tasks using different skills in difficult
and challenging conditions.
The groups
involved represent youth centres, voluntary
groups, uniformed organisations, grass roots
sport, three schools, one college and a training
centre.
The teams will carry out tasks at
10 checkpoints as they navigate through the
woodland. There will be an emphasis on map
reading, compass skills and first
aid.
